March 22, 2006. For
some reason, I got bored of watching Korean infomercials
on tv in our hotel and decided to go out and walk around.
I then spotted a hill and I thought of climbing it.
I asked a person working on the road if there's a trail
to go up the hill. Of course we couldn't understand
each other, but he was nice enough to draw me a map
on the ground and pointed me at the right direction.
The trailhead for this hill is through a temple and
there's a fee to enter. Since that it was already a
late afternoon, I decided to leave this one for a longer
day so I could visit the temple as well. I went back
to the hotel and asked the front desk for a map and
a place for a good short hike up a hill. After a long
body language conversation, he walked me outside the
hotel and led me to a trailhead.
Gilsang mountain is located behind the International
Royal Hotel. The trail I took to hike up started at
the right of the hotel and it follows the ridge (see
white outline on first photo). It was a nice short hike,
well travelled and well signed. It's even doable in
the evening for a nice view of the sunset.
